Biography
RueyShiann Shyu was born in 1966 in Taipei Taiwan and currently lives and works in New York and Taipei. He Studied at Fu-Hsing Trade and Art School, Taipei(1983-1986);Chinese Culture University, Taipei(1989-1992);Aix-en-Provence Art College, Aix-en-Provence, France(1992-1997). In 1998 Shyu was awarded the Taipei Award of Taipei Fine Arts Museum;in 2001 the Creation Awards of Lee Chung Sheng Art Foundation;in 2006 the Yageo Tech-Art Award of the Asian Cultural Council of New York.
Shyu’s work appears in numerous public collections worldwide, including National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts,Taichung; Chelsea Arts Museum, New York; Taipei Gallery, New York; Location One, New York;Stone Villa, Sydney; White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney, Kaohsiung Fine Arts Museum;Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei; Hong Kong Arts Center; Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Australia; Eslite Art Gallery, Taipei; Taipei Fine Arts Museum; Montbeliard, France. Shyu was also commissioned to make permanent public art works such as “Pregency”, National Taiwan University Hospital Yun-Lin Branch, Taiwan(2007); “Restructure Exercise”, Neihu District, Dept. of Environmental Protection, Taipei(2005) ;“Play a melody”, Software Park, Nangang District, Taipei (2005). “Play a melody” was awarded the 2007 Public Art (Excellence) Award.
Shyu is known for creating machine-like art work. By using mechanical form as an abstract art language to express his various ideas and feelings towards life, memory, and issues concerning environment, society, and politics. A work of art may be composed of a single or hundreds to thousands of different components which he designed and made by himself 95% of these; yet, despite this massive complexity, visually it leaves an impression of simplicity.
A documentary film titled “Making Techno Art out of Rubbish—Shyu RueyShiann” focuses on Shyu’s art career, life and families was made by well-known director Huang Mingchuan in 2006.
